Having a beautiful tan for the summer is every one’s dream but how much do you know about the radiation exposure that gives you that bronze skin. By learning about UVA & UVB ray s we can understand what happens to our skin in the sun. UVB has shorter wavelength and only effects the skin surface (the epidermis) and is responsible for skin burns. UVA has longer wavelength and penetrates deeper into the skin (the dermis) and is responsible for skin aging. exposure of our skins to these rays causes the skin to loose its elasticity, creates wrinkles and causes premature aging.
Fortunately as UV rays penetrate the skin, our body’s natural UV protection, melanin is produced to reduce the damaging effects. Both UVA & UVB are responsible for skin cancer including malignant melanoma.
